It's Gandhi Jayanti .....a national holiday celebrated to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi...the " Father of the nation "
Born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869...died in 1948...led India to independence and inspired movements for civili rights across the world. He got the name Mahatma (sanskrit meaning high-souled) in South Africa in 1914. He is also called Bapu here in India, meaning father, papa.
The United Nations General Assembly announced on the 15th june 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that October 2 will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
For all of you who haven't seen the movie Gandhi ( 1982 )with Ben Kingsley as Mahatma please do....
it's a really good movie and it captures what he was all about...
the music is by Ravi Shankar.....Nora Jones dad ( died dec 2012 ) and the director is Richard Attenborough.
