A history lesson at Gandhi Smriti

Saturday we decided to go for a history lesson at Birla house in Delhi
also called Gandhi Smriti
it's the place where Mahatma Gandhi stayed when he was in Delhi
and also the place where he was assassinated on the 30th jan 1949

it tells the story about his life in pictures and words

(unfortunately the whole place was undergoing major reconstruction)

his bedroom and

the room where he worked

his last walk leading up to the monument at the spot where he was shoot

this area in Delhi  is so green and clean !
by the way
Birla house is at 5, Tees January Lane if anyone feels like going

Humayuns Tomb.....

Tuqluqabad........

the lotus temple....Baha House of worship

Lodi garden....

Ugrasen ki Baoli....

so many fun things you can do with a picture !

Bollywood came to Humayun's Tomb

last time I visited Humayun's tomb we couldn't get in at once
no-one told us why, but pretty soon we discovered the reason why....
lights, many meters of cables and cameras kind of gave us a hint
Bollywood had come to shoot scenes for a movie
we weren't aloud to get any pictures
but of course I wanted to get some so...
I managed to get two before this guy was up my face waving his arms and saying no, no, no

they where out there for hours "screaming".....demonstrators with signs....

there's so many wonderful trees in the park.....

the roots look like ?
I always see something in them

even though this must have been my 10th visit to the tomb I still find this place a really nice spot

hmmm...how to ?

love the windows !!

so beautiful....

I do want to know what picture it was they where shooting here that day..
anyone who knows ?

Qila-e-Kuhna Masjid - the mosque of the Old Fort

as I told you in yesterdays post
the mosque was the best thing in Purana Quila...
built in 1541 by Sher Sha
Qila-e-Kuhna Masjid means "the mosque of the old fort"

I couldn't get a picture of the whole front because it was closed of due to reconstruction
so you'll have to do with this entrance....the big one....

the decorations include stone inlay, red and yellow sandstone,
white and black marble, stone carving and tile work....

as always the carvings are just amazing....the craftsmanship in the old days impress me a lot
mixing black and white marble is gorgeous

Kathy on the go with her camera....

the prayer hall is 51 by 15 meters and 16.5 meters in height !

smart solutions back in the days....

I'm considering doing a "top ten things to do in Dehli"
what do you think ? does it sound interesting ?
guess I need to think about that....
we'll see
by by for now

Purana quila - Old fort

sitting in my friends couch freezing after being outside in the cold
brrr....cold and windy but still above zero ....
I needed to get warm so I was looking through my pictures and found these
from Purana quila...
I remember how warm and nice it was that day Kathy and I walked around the fort

I also remember that we where a little disappointed after our visit
it looks so much more interesting from outside the walls
but.....
if living in Delhi I guess you need to go and have a look anyhow

looks so nice and warm, doesn't it....

we found a step well also....small and narrow......

couldn't walk down ....closed off but we did see some guys jumping the fence and climbing down anyhow...why follow rules ? rules are made to be broken ! many many Indians have their own rules I'm sad to say....

most interesting was the mosque so I'll show you in my next post
we're enjoying yet another holiday here but tomorrow
ordinary life is back with normal routines...at least for me
